THREAD ALERT!
Anyone remember FIPA?
The Canada-China trade agreement that Stephen Harper signed w/o ever tabling it in Parliament? #cdnpoli #elxn43 1/10
FIPA has given China UNPRECEDENTED ACCESS to Canada’s natural resources, specifically the #tarsands. PetroChina, for instance, bought a 60% interest in two undeveloped tarsands projects. #cdnpoli #elxn43 2/10
Stephen Harper’s FIPA allows Chinese energy companies to challenge local, provincial + federal policies + laws that interfere w/ China’s right to make a profit from energy projects in Canada. #cdnpoli #elxn43 3/10
That means, any environmental regulations, or halted pipelines, or First Nations land claims, could be subject to lawsuits brought by Chinese corporate interests, thanks to Stephen Harper’s FIPA w/ China. #cdnpoli #elxn43 4/10
ICYMI!
That pipeline the Government of Canada bought was poised to be halted… under Stephen Harper’s FIPA w/ China, he put Canadian sovereignty and Canadians at risk w/ Chinese lawsuits. #cdnpoli #elxn43 5/10
FYI FIPA stands for Foreign Investment Protection Agreement. Stephen Harper agreed to it knowing the risk of such lawsuits to be higher for Canada because Chinese foreign direct investment in Canada is 3-5x the amount of Canadian investment in China. #cdnpoli #elxn43 6/10
Q. How do we stave off Chinese lawsuits?
A. We buy a pipeline.
In buying that pipeline, the Government of Canada bought time…
Time to complete environmental impact assessments, work w/ provinces, address concerns of First Nations, etc., etc., etc. #cdnpoli #elxn43 7/10
The Government of Canada is able to run down the clock on FIPA w/ that pipeline as a Canadian asset.
Yes, China can still file a lawsuit; however, environmental impact assessments, etc. are all done in good faith. #cdnpoli #elxn43 8/10
FYI There is a coalition of Indigenous bands looking to buy 51% stake in the pipeline the Government of Canada bought…
Do you hear Jagmeet Singh or Elizabeth May talking about that at NDP + GPC #elxn43 campaign stops? #cdnpoli 9/10
PS The IRC says the majority of its members want to purchase the project from the Government of Canada and make the pipeline 100% owned, operated and monitored by Indigenous people… #cdnpoli #elxn43 10/10
